TMS junior, Brooke Cheney, has been accepted into this summer’s Young Writers Workshop Bard College.

Located in the Berkshire Mountains, the Young Writers Workshop is an extension of the nationally recognized Bard College Institute for Writing and Thinking. The Workshop has been in operation for the past 29 years and selects 84 applicants annually who show promise in their submitted work and teacher referrals. Brooke was one of those chosen for the summer of 2012.

TMS English Department Chair Joe Dietrich is excited about this opportunity for his student. “The subtlety and yet innocence of her voice often deceive the reader by an undulation between simplicity of delivery and complexity of insight. “

Brooke’s acceptance letter from Dr. Jamie Hutchinson, Director of Young Writers Workshop, was as complimentary as he reflected on the submitted piece. “…your piece had about as distinctive a voice as any application essay I’ve read in recent years. It’s not something readily teachable. The concreteness of the details and the self-reflective honesty make it a powerful piece of nonfiction.”
