The TMS Gym was abuzz on Thursday as the visiting Torrington Christian Academy Flames brought three teams in for a triple header against the Lions. Boys Middle School and Girl's JV both fought hard in the earlier games, and both groups of fans were rearing for action as the marquee Varsity Boys' matchup tipped off at 6pm.
Unfortunately for Masters it was the visiting team that landed the first punches. Playing without starter Sam Amponsah-Minkah the remaining Lions struggled to defend the rim, allowing TCA to score seemingly at will in the paint in the early minutes and giving up 14 first half points to the Flames' #3. On the other end TMS couldn't seem to find the bottom of the bucket, combining to shoot 6-18 as a team and turning the ball over six times in the opening period.
Masters entered the break yet again on the wrong end of a blowout, down 33-18. Yet the Lions wouldn't go down without a fight. At halftime the team found their footing as a group and they came out ready to compete in the second half.
TMS attempted 10 free throws in the second half (after just two in the first), managing to get TCA into the bonus with several minutes still on the clock. The Lions' shooting woes resolved as well, with the team shooting 12-21 in the second half and getting some triples to finally fall (4-6 3PT). In the end the score from the second half was nearly the exact reverse of the first, with Masters outscoring TCA 32-22. Unfortunately that wasn't enough to close the gap.
Center Zech Duval had his work cut out for him in this outing, finding himself in the unusual situation of being undersized against TCA's massive big man. But the senior held his own, tallying 12 points (10 in the second half) to go with 8 much-needed rebounds. Junior Dom Bergantino had an off night offensively, scoring 11 points on 4-16 shooting, but was all over the court on defense doing everything he could to give Masters a fighting chance: deflecting passes, hounding ball handlers, and garnering several steals in the process. Yet it was sophomore Owen Gray who earned Player of the Game honors. Owen ended the game with a tightly efficient 10/3/2 on 75% shooting, playing hard on defense, getting a poster block, and knocking down two clutch threes.
"The boys came out rattled but in the second half fought through the nerves, pain, adversity to claw back from a 15 point deficit," remarked Coach Seignon. "They truly showed a lion's heart."
"I thought we did a good job playing less hectic and more agressive in the second half," said Senior Hayden Peters. "We just need to stay calm and start out stronger next time."
Masters will have the oppurtunity to do just that as they host Woodhall next Wednesday.
