After only a few days of practice the TMS Varisty Boys traveled to South Kent for their first competition of the Winter season. The expected early season cobwebs were apparent from the opening tip, as the Lions struggled to maintain their spacing on offense or defend with purpose on the other end. Masters allowed the home team to open a 25-6 lead in the first 8 minutes of play.
Sixth man Will Frey proved to be a difference maker in lifting the energy in the first half: the Lions managed to pull within 10 during his first stint on the court. Will recorded 2 PTS, 1 AST, and 1 REB during this stint but did much to get the ball moving and offense flowing, including finding a cutting Hayden Peters with a beautiful backdoor pass.
The Lions entered half time with the deficit shrunk to a manageable distance and came out of the locker room in the second half looking like a different team: fighting for rebounds, cutting with purpose, and otherwise doing everything they could to claw back into the game.
Sam Aponsah-Minkah and Zech Duval worked in tandem to hold their ground in the paint, collecting 5 offensive rebounds between them and racking up fouls against South Kent (who spent the final 7 minutes of the game in the bonus).
Player of the Game Dom Bergantino finished with 21 PTS, 2 AST, 5 REB, and 6 STL. Dom was everywhere on the court in this first outing: pushing the ball on fast breaks, diving for loose balls, and attacking the basket again and again. Dom finished several nifty reverses throughout the game including one tough one with his off-hand in traffic.
After digging themselves into a 19-point first half hole Master's actually dominated the scoring in the rest of the game, outscoring South Kent 40-28 after the slow start. The boys will have a lot to work on in their next week of practices and will look forward to a stronger outing against TCA after Thanksgiving Break.
