Fresh off a big win against Midstate, The Master's School traveled to Newington to complete the season series against Emmanuel Christian Academy. Earlier in the season, the Lions had snuck out a 3-2 victory over the Falcons, but hoped to establish a stronger result in their second match.
Despite a beautiful sunny day, the conditions were wet, especially around the goal boxes, resulting in an occasionally sloppy match, which Master's nonetheless won convincingly.
Both teams struggled to establish possession in the early minutes of the game as the extra space of Emmanuel's wide field created a somewhat frantic back-and-forth matchup. Neither team managed to settle in, and although Master's created many meaningful scoring opportunities, they unfortunately failed to convert, often passing the ball directly to the opponent's keeper. Then finally, Christina Volpe opened the scoring, burying a beautiful shot in the side netting.
Emmanuel responded almost immediately to equalize the score. The score hung at 1-1 for quite a while after until Ben Frey found the net on a beautiful volley off a cross from Dom Bergantino.
Master's' usually strong back line seemed porous in the first half, allowing many balls to get through, but goalie Cam Peters kept tight control over his box, and the one goal was all he allowed in the first half.
With a chance to regroup at halftime, Master's opened the second with a renewed attack, led especially by Gage Arnold. Despite coming off along a few days sick, Gage scored twice in the second half. Dom was also dynamic up front, slicing through the opponent's defense and generating nine shots on goal. On a drier surface, we might have seen a hattrick, but Gage's two goals were enough to widen Master's' lead to a comfortable distance.
Opportunistic finishes from Dom Bergantino and Will Frey broke the game wide open as Master's enjoyed a comfortable coast to a 6-2 victory.
Many performances stand out in the wire-to-wire win, but perhaps none more than reserve center back Leah Langlois, who earned Player of the Game honors for her aggressive defense. Keira Weed-Allen and Saylor Willauer also contributed huge minutes for the Lions.
The team now looks forward to hosting the alumni at Fall Festival on Saturday.
Great game, Lions!
