Arnold and Bergantino Lift TMS as Lions Blank CCS
Cornerstone often makes for a competetive match for Masters and Thursday's game was no different. The first half was tightly contested as both teams fought to control posession throughout. Center Mids Will Frey, Christina Volpe, and Luke Boucher combined excellently to create opportunities as the back four held the line.
After several excellent attempts from Dom Bergantino and Will Frey, Gage Arnold found the back of the net off a cross from Christina Volpe in the 36th minute. Arnold was perfectly placed and finished cleanly with his left foot. The Lions would manage to hold on for the remainder of the half, with keeper Cam Peters making an excellent diving save in the 39th minute to keep the hosts in the lead.
Master's opened the second half poorly, stepping out with low energy and allowing Cornerstone to assert themselves in the opening minutes, but another save from Cam in the 42nd allowed the Lions to maintain the clean sheet as the tide changed. Then the Lions again found their legs while CCS tired, leading to 10 second half scoring opportunites including a 57th minute screamer off the bar from target Dom Bergantino. Dom found the net ten minutes later, pinning his defender on his hip and chipping the keeper from the top of the box.
CM Christina Volpe earns Player of the Game honors for her stellar control of the middle third and vocal leadership throughout the match. Volpe's touch was crisp and her patient passing was the spark for much of the Lions' offense - great game Christina!
Master's will travel to Block Island this weekend for a Saturday match before taking on TCA next week.
