It was a beautiful and sunny afternoon as The Master's School Varsity Boys Soccer team prepared to host the visiting Trinity Swordsmen who arrived from Concord NH ready to compete. From the opening whistle it was clear that the match would be hard-fought as both teams struggled to maintain significant posession despite several early scoring opportunities for each side.
Playing without striker
Luke Boucher (illness), defender
Liza Gray (illness), midfielder
Patrick Marcolesco (injury) and sweeper
Dominic Bergantino (injury), the short-handed Lions worked hard to find a scoring edge, but after 12 minutes of back-and-forth play found themselves down 1-0 as a Trinity shot found the back corner just past the outstretched hands of keeper
Zech Duval. Six minutes later the Swordsmen's lead widened to two on a well-executed header off of a corner kick.
The game remained level for the remainder of the first half, until
Tommy Yawingu found
Sam Amponsah-Minkah with an excellent through-ball to the top of the penalty box. A hard foul against the Lions' striker gave Master's a golden oppurtnity from 22 yards out and captain
Daniel Volpe did not disappoint - curling a shot around the defending wall and under the visiting keeper's dive to make it 2-1 Trinity as the first half came to a close.
Coming out of the break Master's managed to keep the Swordsmen attack at bay, led especially by the sophomore back line of
Gage Arnold, Owen Gray, and
Will Frey who each played the full 80 minutes with an intensity and competetiveness that kept the Lions in the hunt. Captain
Dylon Tackett was characteristically solid in defense, individually stopping several potential Trinity goals while
Zech Duval also contributed several outstanding saves.
Unfortunately the visitors would find the back of the net for a third time: a 77th minute volley off the long throw which put the game away for good.
"I thought we played well," said Coach Erik after the game, "even with so few subs and a few unfortunate injuries, the team pushed through and played hard. The communication was better, but we can still work on maintaining our tenacity as a team. I think Will and Gage really stepped up in covering for Dom not being our sweeper. Of course Danny’s free kick was a highlight."
Coach Gray was in agreement: "They fought hard against a tough team despite missing three starters. Sam stood out by challenging opponents and setting us up to score our only goal."
The Lions will retake the field on Tuesday as they host Torrington Christian Academy. Good game boys!
