In the most highly competetive match of the season, the Lions failed to score and had to walk away with an 0-2 defeat.
The game opened as most seem to, with Master's starting somewhat slow yet creating opportunities through the midfield. TMS built up to several golden chances in the first half but still struggled to put any pace on their shots and the teams entered half time locked in a 0-0 draw. Standout keeper Cam Peters was on his game, collecting six first half saves with a handful at point blank range.
Olivet broke through first, in the 60th minute as the home captain pushed past the Lions' midfield and buried a shot from 25 yards out. To their credit Master's responded with renewed fight, pushing through the gaps and keeping pressure on Olivet's back line. Dom Bergantino did well to draw a penalty ten minutes later, but TMS couldn't convert and the game remained at a defecit.
Much credit needs to be given to the Lions' back line of Owen Gray, Ben & Tommy Yawingu, and Man of the Match Evan Ellrod. Olivet's front 6 were quick and strong and the defense held the line, drawing Olivet offsides again and again and continually building a wall in front to protect their goal but Ellrod stood out as Masters' constant final line, winning several tense one on one plays and clearing the ball off the line on at least two occasions. Reagan Luchina also contributed well in meaningul minutes along the back.
With time winding down and the team still strugging to capitalize on their chances, TMS pulled a defender in favor of an extra midfielder and conceded a second time in the final minutes.
A tough loss to a good team. After a day to regroup Master's will travel to Central Christian Thursday and hope to reverse the outcome of their home opener.
